A wedding ring is not only the typical symbol of love, it also stands for commitment and fidelity. Many couples use their engagement ring for their wedding, while others prefer a real wedding ring. Of course, the differences are minimal, but the engagement ring is traditionally presented first.

The origin of wearing a wedding ring is difficult to determine. In many cultures and religions, the tradition is different. However, all wedding rings have one thing in common: the promise of love, fidelity and affection.

While engagement rings from Switzerland are characterised by one or more diamonds, special wedding rings are rather plain. They are made of simple gold, white gold or silver and are characterised by their unique elegance.

The engagement ring is rarely bought by two partners together. It is often the male partner who goes in search of the perfect engagement ring. With wedding rings, both people are usually involved, as both are likely to have the same style.

Since wedding rings are usually on your finger for life, they should be robust and able to withstand a lot. Swiss wedding rings in particular are predicted to have a long life, as the quality speaks for itself.

Gold or silver: which material is best for wedding rings?

Yellow gold is the classic wedding ring and is as popular today as it was then. Many men, however, prefer silver tones. Platinum or palladium are valued for their masculine look. Above all, the properties of these popular precious metals make these rings something very special.

In contrast to soft gold, which wears out more easily, platinum and palladium are dimensionally stable and significantly more robust. They are therefore perfect for men who are active in their work and leisure time.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, you’re spoilt for choice. When it comes to materials alone, there are plenty of options and different criteria. Wedding rings can offer different colour shades or different materials such as gold, titanium or silver and much more.

However, quality should always come first. After all, the piece of jewellery will stay on your finger for a lifetime.

Classic gold rings are the most common. They can be made of 100% gold or only be gold-plated on the surface. Although the difference is minimal, the top layer tends to flake off after some time.

With white gold wedding rings, the actual colour is removed from a gold ring with the help of siber, platinum elements and chrome. The end product resembles silver in appearance and is wonderfully elegant. The material is robust, stable and the surface hardly wears off.

Whether gold, silver or white gold: what are the costs?

The cost of wedding rings varies greatly. Factors such as material, details, manufacture and provider are decisive. High-quality wedding rings cost between 250 and over 5,000 euros. However, there are several factors that influence the price difference:

  • Precious metal: Prices for precious metals depend on the current exchange rate.
  • Alloy: The amount determines the price.
  • Decoration: Manual labour is time-consuming and is reflected in the price
  • Diamonds: The purer the stone, the higher the cost.
  • Multi-coloured wedding rings: The fusion of different materials results in additional costs.

The time of purchase plays a subordinate role. However, in the winter months, when there are fewer weddings, seasonal discounts are available. Wedding rings are available from jewellers as well as in online shops in a wide range of price categories.

Numerous wedding rings are available in Switzerland for less than 100 euros, while other models are in the four-digit range. The simpler the wedding ring, the cheaper the cost.

Bi-colour rings, variants with a stone or even the top class with diamonds, on the other hand, are much more expensive.

Especially personal: wedding rings from Switzerland with engraving

The classic gold wedding ring is by no means old-fashioned and boring. Quite the opposite. Gold wedding rings are comfortable to wear, elegant and go with all outfits. Of course, wedding rings made from other materials are also worth considering. Which ring you ultimately choose depends solely on your personal taste.

Engagement rings in the modern age

If you want to wear very special wedding rings on your finger, have them engraved. Names, wedding date or a symbol are particularly popular. Intertwined hearts or a horizontal figure eight as a symbol of infinity are also among the favourites.

In addition, different engraving techniques are available. More complex engravings such as a signature or a fingerprint are of course associated with additional costs. Customers in Switzerland can choose from a wide range of fonts, from ornate letters to modern block letters, whatever their heart desires.

What to do if the wedding ring doesn’t fit (anymore)

A wedding ring must fit well. Over the years, however, fingers change and what fitted well at the wedding now slips or fits too tightly. With a valuable ring, as is the case with a wedding ring, the person concerned should consult a jeweller.

The jeweller has sufficient experience with different precious metals so that the “intervention” is not visible later. A reduction in size can be achieved with a metal insert, for example. This is attached to the inside or the ring is “compressed”.

The third option is to saw the ring open, remove a part and reassemble the ring.

In the opposite case, the ring can be stretched. If expansion is not sufficient, the ring is opened again and a section is inserted. However, this procedure only works if the ring is made of an alloy with a high proportion of gold and silver. Wedding rings made of stainless steel or titanium can only be changed with a great deal of additional effort.
